La storia si serve degli uomini, ma va al di là delle loro persone e non realizza mai i suoi fini secondo una logica prestabilita Montale’s first article for the “Corriere” – the unsigned account of Gandhi’s death: “The apostle of nonviolence died as a result of an act of violence.” The Mahatma was killed at the moment when India and perhaps even England most needed him. History uses men, but goes beyond their persons and never realizes its ends according to a predetermined logic. #Montale #first #Corriere #Gandhi #Mahatma #India #England https://www.corriere.it/sette/26_marzo_19/articolo-montale-corriere-c06498fb-a783-4d35-b8b1-5f5d1c6bbxlk.shtml

🌱 First Bus, in partnership with bus supplier Pelican Bus and Coach and woodland project organiser Carma, has participated in a significant tree-planting initiative. Staff from First Bus joined a planting day at Olden Farm near Thornbury, where 1,000 trees were planted as part of a project linked to the supply of electric buses. Pelican commits to planting 10 trees for every electric bus delivered. The West of #England Mayor, Helen Godwin, also attended, highlighting the region's commitment to environmental sustainability and investment in electric buses. This initiative supports Carma's work in developing woodland projects and assisting veterans. First Bus has already introduced 98 electric buses in the West of England, with plans for more, aiming for a fully electric fleet by 2035. The project underscores a broader effort to decarbonise transport and improve local environments. https://news.firstbus.co.uk/news/tree-planting-bristol

Wow! #R4Today on #Italy's historic (first time ever) victory over #England in the #SixNations rugby tournament. A commentator described the event through a reference to the aphorism "Life is a road full of flattened squirrels who were incapable of making timely decisions."

Sailing towards spring with a River Wear vista in NE England, captured late afternoon during this week's Springtime taster. It was lovely to see the slight haziness diffusing the warmer hues of the sun's rays across Sunderland's city skyline. Bit of a weather blip today (Friday), but the sun is forecast to be back on Saturday. #england #sunderland #wearside #landscape #march2026 #weather #photography

🚄🔧 Passengers are warned of rail disruptions south of Peterborough on Sunday 15 March due to further testing of a new digital signalling system. Thameslink and Great Northern services will not run on key sections, with replacement #buses operating between Hitchin, Bedford, Peterborough, St Neots, Stevenage, Hertford North, Potters Bar and #Luton #Airport Parkway. Long-distance trains from northern #England will start or terminate at #Peterborough, with coaches connecting to Bedford and #London. The £1.4bn East Coast Digital Programme is introducing in-cab digital signalling between Welwyn and Hitchin later this year, aiming for safer, greener, and more reliable journeys. Passengers are advised to check National Rail before travelling and allow extra time. https://www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/govia-thameslink-railway/pressreleases/video-passengers-reminded-of-rail-service-changes-south-of-peterborough-on-sunday-15-march-3435932

High tide on the River Wear below Queen Alexander Bridge in Sunderland, NE England this afternoon. Officially opened by The Earl of Durham, on behalf of Queen Alexandra on 10 June 1909, at the time it initially held the record as the heaviest bridge in the United Kingdom. The bridge structure is also framing the central pylon further upstream of the Northern Spire crossing which opened to traffic on 29 August 2018. #england #sunderland #bridge #landscape #march2026 #photograph

🚄🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🎫💳 Millions of passengers in #England are benefiting from the first nationwide rail fare freeze in 30 years, as the Government halts planned increases to regulated fares including season tickets, peak and off-peak returns. More than a billion journeys a year are covered. Without the intervention, fares would have risen by 5.8 per cent. The freeze is expected to save passengers £600 million in 2026/27, with some commuters saving over £300 annually. Ministers say the move will ease living costs and support economic growth as plans progress to establish Great #British #Railways under public ownership. New refund rules will also aim to curb fare fraud, saving around £40 million a year. https://dft-newsroom.prgloo.com/news/passengers-save-millions-as-rail-fare-freeze-starts

After learning about the lack of sunlight hours during the start to 2026, it is fingers crossed for some sunnier days ahead as we head into the month of March. This fleeting glimpse of some February sunshine was captured at Sunderland's Herrington Country Park in NE England. This is one of the commissioned art installations situated around the popular open space, with Penshaw Monument, one of the region's best-known landmarks dominating the surrounding landscape. Still vividly recall standing around about here taking photographs when the site was just a huge opencast coal mine – what a transformation since then! The park today attracts many visitors with its safe cycling and walking paths, lakes and a café. In just a few weeks Herrington Country Park will also be the venue for the BBC's Radio 1 Big Weekend. #england #sunderland #bbc #radioonebigweekend #landscape #photography
